The Marcy-Holmes neighborhood in Minneapolis is unique in that it was the first neighborhood to be established in the city. It was named after Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American poet, author and professor, and William L. Marcy, a former US Senator and Secretary of State. Its location in Minneapolis is a prominent one as it is bordered by the great Mississippi River as well as the University of Minnesota. The Como neighborhood makes up one of the boundaries of the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood and the East Hennepin and Central Avenue commercial area is another boundary. There are several features throughout the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood that make it an attractive place for today’s residents. The B.O. Cutter House is one landmark that was built in the 1850s. It was built in the style of Carpenter Gothic which included hand-carved moldings and other unique features. Other great features include the Frey Mansion, the Marcy-Holmes Community Garden, Florence Court and more.
